I found this site a few weeks ago and picked a few of my favourites. Do you wear Linen? is there a way to stop it creasing? apart from never sitting down....

Vintage Bits and Bobs and Rather Nice

As you can see from her collection  you just know that Julie loves vintage and quirky items, china, linens and lace, she goes on little journeys and sources some great pieces and so her "Rather Nice" and Vintage Bits & Bobs stores were born.   Looking for some china then Julie has some wonderful pieces, sipping a cup of tea from a china cup is in my opinion pure heaven.  Julie also reworks some of her finds to fit in the modern day home.

Julie hand dyes her cotton tape with brewing 2 tea bags from Tea Pigs Bollywood chai is her favourite, she then adds the tape to let it infuse and says that the aroma of cinnamon and cardamom fill the room and it feels like down town Cochin at the chai stall. I am going to have to try this out for myself.

Pop over and have a look at some of her other lovely items, you never know you might just find something you just have to have:) As for me I am off to have a cup of tea.

How to Dye Happily

You might remember me showing you a picture of the Indigo blue dye above which I bought when I was in Morocco (Essaouira) earlier this year.
It’s a stunning intense blue and harvested from the sea snail called Hexaplex trunculus. Just trips of the tongue that one, don’t you think? Well I have wanted to try the dye out since May and yesterday morning I decided today was the day. I had no idea as to how much powder to put in so I just chucked a goodly amount in and threw some salt in whilst I was at it and left it to simmer away for an hour or so to do its own thing, I just love messing about with natural dyes despite having no real idea what I am doing and without any immediate plans on what to do with it when finished.

It just fascinates me watching the dyes transform, this one reminds me of batik work or as my girlfriend suggested (tongue in cheek) the Turin Shroud.

I think as the linen is old and has probably been washed hundreds of times some areas are more worn than others and yet the linen does not look in the slightest way worn, so will remain a mystery. Any way thought I would let you see how it turned out.

Well I can see why now the thought of the Turin Shroud popped into my friends head! So I have saved the remaining mixture for another day, will it keep and for how long, time will tell no doubt. If I could have I would have brought all the gorgeous colours back.

A Handmade House Warming Gift

My daughter and family moved into their new house a few weeks ago and she now has her own space to create a sewing area. She has been smitten with the craft bug! And she/we are having fun working together when we get a chance, so I decided I would make her a little organiser for her to hang next to her work area. I saw something similar on Pinterest and thought it would be fun to try out, so yet again I went through my materials (still in the same state as last week, now only worse) and I found an old flowery dress, some linen (of course) and a few other wee bits and bobs. I embroidered “my sewing room” across the top and added a little mannequin who is now wearing her own mini version of the dress with a lace petticoat, a little basket with tooth picks and beads for knitting needles, a couple of pin cushions and a few pockets. I hope she likes it as it took me an age to finish! Will be taking it up to her in the next few days, so will let you know the verdict. What do you think, will she?

Got 2 exciting giveaways that I am just putting together, more on them later.

Dyed in the Woad

/

Last year I took a textile course held in the beautiful 18th century Chateau Dumas where we collected various pieces of vintage linens and then dyed them in woad using an ancient technique shown to us by Denise Lambert. I have to say that the smell of the woad was too say the least quite revolting but easily forgiven for producing such beautiful shades of blues.
If you would like to know more about this amazing plant check it out here http://www.woad.org.uk
